The Dovecotes - (Set time: 11:00 PM)
The Dovecotes
Portland power pop four-piece The Dovecotes recall freewheeling, halcyon days of early 90s Stumptown bands like Pond and Heatmiser. Instead of guitars aggressively propelling into the rock stratosphere, Hugh Jepson's vocals, delivered from dreamland, are the real catalyst, gently and slowly tugging the listener into outer space. Dovecotes' guitar stylings are quintessential indie: jangly yet melodically complex, providing that slow burn throughout the life of the tune.

The Dovecotes formed at the beginning of 2015 after releasing Humdrum, an album of home recordings by Hugh Jepson (vocals, guitar) and Dustin Stallings (guitar). They quickly enlisted the help of their friends Forest Gallien (bass) and Lukas Schneider (drums) to perform live. Throughout the rest of the year the band focused on playing shows around the NW region, and recording new material with Victor Nash at Destination: Universe!. They released three EP’s (DoReMi, Quiet Heat, and Idle Time) as part of Victor’s Digital 7-inch project, each with an A/B single.

In the summer of 2016 The Dovecotes set out to record their second album, Humorless. Spending eight days at Miracle Lake Studios with producer Skyler Norwood (Talkdemonic, Blind Pilot, Point Juncture WA) the band recorded their most cohesive set of songs yet, channeling the complex pop sensibilities of old and new influences such as Blur, Elliott Smith, and Helvetia. Jepson, the primary songwriter, focused on trimming the songs down to their most necessary parts while keeping the chord progressions and arrangements dynamic and unpredictable, shaped around lyrical themes of personal loss and social anxiety.

Praise for The Dovecotes:

“The Dovecotes is one of the latest promising acts to come out of Portland’s thriving indie rock scene.” – Anna McClain (OPB Music)

“With a gentle Dirty Projectors-like vocal style but less aggressive rhythmic hooks, Dovecotes meander into musical outer space rather than rocket into the cosmos.” – Willamette Week

“…beguiling, almost deviously complex pop, with dreamlike, watery passages alongside sharp-strummed folk rock.” – Portland Mercury

“Staying on their same course of jangly dream pop, Humorless is the perfect follow-up chapter for the near two year old quartet.” - The Deli
Risley - (Set time: 10:00 PM)
Risley
'Risley' is a new band made up of the collective contributions of some of Portland's more familiar musical voices including members of Tea for Julie, Genders, Typhoon, The Priory, Sunbathe, Paper Brain, Poison Beaches and more.

Michael Deresh has been a fixture of the Portland music community since 1997. He was one of the founding members and organizers of PDXPOPNOW! From 2002-2010, the band he and current bandmate Travis Stanek were in, Tea For Julie, opened for acts like The Lemonheads, Menomena, Snow Patrol, Evan Dando and The Thermals, played the Crystal ballroom 7 times, the Showbox in Seattle, had a song featured on major OSU tv ad and was in heavy rotation on Seattle's KEXP and Portland's KNRK. After several live on-air performances, their album 'Division' was ranked at #53 of KEXP's top 91.3 albums of 2005.

In 2010, he founded Lamplight Recording Studio in SE Portland and has recorded and produced favorite local albums such as Genders' 'Get Lost', Sunbathe's debut, etc. In the meantime, collaborating with many friends, 138 songs were written and recorded over those several years.

Finally, the mass of material was wittled down and put through the refiner's fire. The result is an album full of sonic and genre twists and turns bearing the collective contributions of members of some of Portland's finest talent. It ranges from post-punk to millenial indie rock from dancey to alt-country, and all with a unifying thread of sound and spirit.
