The Jenny Finn Orchestra - (Set time: 6:30 PM)
The Jenny Finn Orchestra hails from the soggy burg of Portland, Oregon. When Ain't Misbehavin', the band plays vintage swing jazz of the 1920's-1940's in string orchestra format. Conductor Twayn Williams leads the band on guitar with driving Gypsy Swing rhythms. Hank Hadeed brings his bebop, jazz and blues influence to the mix, adding color and finger-burning solos. We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye to talented and classically trained Megan Moran on violin, who has temporarily relocated to Boston, but she'll be back before we know it. In the meantime, it's just Too Darn Hot when we invite other local talents to complete the sextet. The icing on this tasty cake is the vocal performances of Carrie Baldwin-Sayre and Janet Lindsley. Doctor-in-the-house Carrie fronts the band with extensive experience in theater and dance. She brings double the fun - she can sing and sew up our wounds when needed. Operatically trained and accordion-slinging Janet sings and adds sweet and spooky vocal harmonies. Well over Five Foot Two with eyes of blue is James "J'attendrai" Delaney, rounding out the sound on the upright bass. This sextet swings Night and Day in venues in Portland and beyond.
The Pepper Grinders feat. Ralph Carney - (Set time: 9:00 PM)
New transplant to Portland, legendary Saxophonist Ralph Carney, who has honked his saxes with the likes of Tom Waits, the B52'S and many others, has started a new hard swinging band, The Pepper Grinders. Using the cream of the crop of amazing Portland players, the band is dedicated to the sound of the jump blues bands and the screaming sax greats from the late 40's and early 50’s. The set list will include covers by the likes of Big Jay McNeely, Earl Bostic, Willis Jackson and more. This band is sure to get you into a dancing frenzy! Featuring Carlton Jackson on drums, Mike Danner on Keys, Chris Key on Bass, and Dan Lowinger on Guitar.
Melissa Roane - (Set time: 6:00 PM)
Melissa, though too modest to admit it, is one of Portland’s most important figures in Vintage Style Swing Dances. She has been teaching at the Viscount Dance Studio since 2003 and has taught, deejayed, and performed at various events around town. Her approachability, knowledge, fun classes, and dance style have garnered her a solid following and place among the Portland’s great swing instructors.
The Portland Lindy Society - (Set time: 6:00 PM)
Portland Lindy Society is a non-profit organization that promotes swing dancing and jazz music in Portland, OR. We host a dance each Thursday at The Secret Society ballroom.
