The High Water Jazz Band - (Set time: 11:00 PM)
The High Water Jazz Band
The High Water Jazz Band creates their own unique sound by combining
traditional jazz with early rhythm & blues. Featuring the phenomenal
vocals of Joy Pearson, this Portland, OR 5-piece also includes the
stellar playing of Joe Baker (guitar), Andrew Alikhanov (clarinet),
Kirch Hertel (drum set) and James Cook (upright bass). Whether they
are doing an obscure or well-known classic from the 1920's, 30's or
40's, jazzing up an old hillbilly number, or performing one of their
timeless originals, listeners know that they are hearing something
special.
Joe Baker & The Kitchen Men - (Set time: 10:00 PM)
Joe Baker & The Kitchen Men
Joe Baker and The Kitchen Men are comprised of Joe Baker (guitar, vocals), Andrew Alikhanov (clarinet), Leon Cotter (tenor sax), James Cook (upright bass), and Josh "Kirch" Hertel (drums). Their take on 78 RPM-era hot jazz, hillbilly and blues has been stirring Portland, Oregon audiences into a frenzy since, January 2016. Though this is one of the newest groups of it's kind in town, it's members are no strangers to the gig-going patrons of Portland's barrooms, ballrooms, nightclubs, and banquet halls. All members perform in The High Water Jazz Band, while many of them can be found playing regularly with other great local swing and roots acts including Trashcan Joe, Smut City Jelly Roll Society, Jenny Finn Orchestra, etc. Joe Baker first appeared on Portland stages 20 years ago, playing guitar and drums in punk bands at long shuttered clubs like EJ's and Satyricon. In the mid-2000's he decided he'd heard enough super loud rock music to last the rest of his life, and to instead indulge his passion for the music of the early to mid-20th century by forming, Joe Baker and his Barefoot Brakemen, a precursor to his current group. After a 2-year run, the band called it quits and Joe retreated into his basement to continue studying all the old jazz, country and blues music he could find, mostly by listening to old records. In 2013, he reappeared by organizing a monthly event called The Jelly Roll Jamboree where he performed as well as featured four different local roots acts, showcasing the diversity within the Portland old-time music community. Through this show he met the players he would eventually form The High Water Jazz Band with. That band has enjoyed an incredible first year, while his monthly night has moved out of a tiny bar and into the historic Clinton Street Theater, where it is enjoying success as, The Clinton Street Stomp. With his newest group, Joe continues to play guitar and is back on the vocal mic as well. Backed by some of the finest reedsmen in town and a rhythm section that simply can't be beat, Joe Baker and The Kitchen Men is sure to satisfy the appetites for those seeking a fiery mix of swingin' old time sounds.
