Where is the Secret Society?
Shhhhh... don't tell anybody.
Really, it's a secret. But if you should happen to find yourself wandering
near the Wonder Ballroom on Russell, just off MLK Jr. Blvd. in NE Portland,
then you just might find us. Some say we are located at 116 NE Russell,
but we'll never confirm nor deny that.
What is the Secret Society?
Secret societies
generally don't like to tell you what there all about, but we'll
give you just a glimpse. The Secret Society is a recording studio and
ballroom, designed to meet the needs of musicians of all levels. The
main studio has a large live room, two isolation rooms, control room,
lounge, and a bathroom (one secret is that the bathroom sounds great
and is wired for sound). The 1800 sq. ft. ballroom is upstairs and is
also wired for sound. The ballroom has 14 ft. high ceiling and a warm
and vibrant sound.
We believe that the working relationship between the physical recording
space, the engineer/producer, and the musician have a tremendous effect
on the outcome of a project. The Secret Society has been created
with this ultimate vibe in mind.
What are the rates for recording
at the Secret Society?
We offer both hourly and
block rates. The recording studio is $350 per 10-hr day. If you
have the need for shorter sessions, the rate is $40 per hour. This
includes our house engineer and access to all rooms, including the ballroom,
although we need advance notice for use of the ballroom, and the
ballroom is not always available for recording.
If you want to bring in your own, the studio is $250 per day without
engineer. We do need to approve of any freelance engineers, and probably
take an hour or two to go over the various features, secret stashes,
and idiosyncrasies of the studio.
We do not charge for CD-Rs or DVD-Rs, up to a reasonable amount used.
Studio sessions need to be paid in full at the end of each session. We
accept cash, check, or credit card via Paypal.
Do you offer any other service
at the Secret Society besides recording?
Yes! We also offer instrument
lessons, recording classes and workshops, and occasional free tours.

How do I schedule a recording
session at the Secret Society?
Please email studio@secretsociety.net or
call us at 503.493.3600. If you are booking more than 4 hours,
you will need to send in a deposit of $200 to confirm the session.
What if I need to cancel
my recording session?
If you must cancel your
recording session, please notify the studio as soon as possible, by phone
or email. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before the session time
are subject to a cancellation fee of $100, which will be taken out of
your deposit. You will be charged the full deposit amount of $200 if
you do not notify the studio of a cancellation.
What kind of media do I
need so I can take home my master tracks?
We highly recommend buying
a backup hard drive for storing backups of your master tracks. An 80GB
firewire 400 drive will hold most projects with no problem and can be
found at Office Depot, Fred Myer, etc. for around $100.
We are happy to backup your project to DVD-R. We always have these
in stock and do not charge for these, however we will charge
for whatever time it takes to burn the discs.
