Jesse Lege & Joel Savoy - (Set time: 6:00 PM)
Jesse Lege & Joel Savoy
We play Cajun music from Southwest Louisiana with great joy.

Jesse and I share a feeling of freedom in this music- our music- and we feel that in order to keep this music alive it needs to have real ‘life.’ And I’m not saying you need to dance around while you play. I mean we’re not trying to preserve music from the past like a snapshot. Our music changes every day with every influence around us. We’re not traditionalists, although we have both studied the music of our predecessors and feel at home playing stripped down traditional music. We’re also not progressive since we’re doing the same thing that’s gone on down here since there were folks around. We’re just living our culture, and the music we make is a natural extension of our daily lives.

I guess we really just want to share our spirit about music with the world- to show people that music comes from the heart and doesn’t need anything to dress it up. When we play we have fun. We can’t not have fun! and our audiences pick up on that and they have fun, too. It’s not artificial and it’s not a ‘show.’ It’s what I like to call ‘honest’ music. To me that honesty is lacking in a lot of music today, and so I’m happy to have found a musical partner that shares this same spirit. Jesse is one of the most innovative accordion players out there- he never stops creating, he never stops reaching for more on his instrument. Couple that with the voice of a canary (a very Cajun canary) and a repertoire that spans days, and you have my friend the Lion de Gueydan, Jesse Lége.

I first had the opportunity to play with Jesse through my friend and longtime mentor Ms. Tina Pilione back in the late 90s who was playing fiddle with Jesse at the time. I was a teenager who had been playing Cajun fiddle and various styles of guitar for about 5 years and Tina asked me to come along to the Rodair Club in Port Acres, Texas, to try my hand at Cajun rhythm guitar since their regular guitar player was unavailable. I don’t think I did all that well that night, but it was beginning of a long relationship with Jesse and his dancehall music that has taken us across the world together. And we’re only just beginning! We’ve just released a new CD with our good buddies from Portland, the Foghorn Trio (and friends), which takes Cajun music to Texas and back with steel guitar, drums, and upright bass. Tracked live in my little studio in Eunice, this joyous recording is bursting with energy, and I’m sure it’ll have you dancing! And that’s what it’s all about: FUN!

So next time we come to town, come on out and say hi and listen and dance if you feel like it. Be a part of our music instead of a background for it.
